Considerable effort recently has been invested in developing effective therapeutic agents that can arrest, delay, or reverse cerebral ischemia and neural injury. Current research has focused mainly on 4 pharmacologic treatments: (1) heparin, (2) calcium channel blockers, (3) thrombolytic agents, and (4) neuroprotective medications.
